Queen Victoria Clock Tower
Located on Light Street is the Queen Victoria Clock Tower which measures 60 feet in height. The tower is a colonial reminder from the British Empire era in Penang and was built to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee in 1897. The tower was gifted to the British authorities by Cheah Chen Eok, a local millionaire. The tower is built in a Moorish style and from far, it looks like a minaret of a mosque.
Penang State Museum
Another important tourist attraction in Georgetown is the Penang State Museum, which was built in 1965. The museum is home to a collection of state treasures and priceless artifacts. Visitors here can view eight out of ten original oil paintings by Captain Robert Smith, a world renowned artist. Besides these, there are other items displayed here, including furniture, porcelain, costumes and jewelry from pervious eras.
Fort Cornwallis
This is an ancient fort which was built by the founder of the town, Francis Light. The fort has been built on the same spot where Light landed in 1786. Originally, it was built by convicts as a wooden stockade to receive upgrades through time. The fort has now become an open-air park with a history gallery, amphitheatre, souvenir shops and cafes. Visitors can also get a glimpse of canons sitting around the park.
